Republic County was organized in September 1868. At the election in 1869 Belleville was declared the permanent location of the County Seat. Republic County received its name from the Republican River, which extends through the county. The river was so called because many years ago the valley of that stream was the seat of the "Pawnee Republic", a designation given to a principal division of the Pawnee Indians, or Panis, as they were originally known. Many of the early settlers in Republic County were from Scandinavian or Czechoslovakia. Cuba was name for Kuba, a city in Bohemia. Scandia was settled by Swedes, and Norway by Norwegians.
The Belleville Town site Company was organized on the 25th day of September, 1869. The site was selected and the town was christened Belleville, on motion of A. B. Tutton, in honor of his wife, Arabella.
